Fortunately, they are generally quite harmless and are an important part of the ecosystem as they eat insects, though if you come across one while moving a box or sweeping out a corner, you’re definitely going to be startled! Preventing and Getting Rid of Wolf Spiders in North Carolina On the other hand, they will take up residence in your basement, garage, or a rarely used closet, in order to escape cold weather or find food. The good news is that wolf spiders don’t like “people food,” and they tend to avoid humans, so you likely won’t see one in your kitchen or a high-traffic area of your home. They tend to burrow in leaves and around the ground, venturing out at night for food. Unlike most spiders, they don’t build webs to catch prey, instead, they are fast-moving hunters that chase down prey like flies and other small insects. Plus, brown recluses are a uniform brown color without noticeable hair, unlike wolf spiders which have a multi-color brownish or brownish-gray color with hair. So, how do you know the difference? The most noticeable difference is size – brown recluses are only about a half-inch long at most, and wolf spiders are much bigger. When most people see a brown spider, they immediately think of the venomous brown recluse rather than a wolf spider. In addition to their large size, they are a lighter color, usually a mottled medium brown or a brownish-gray with noticeable hair or fur, and if you get close enough (not that most people do), you’ll see eight eyes placed in two rows on its head. It’s not uncommon to see a spider around three inches in length including the leg span. Wolf spiders are one of the largest spiders in North Carolina with big bodies and large legs. Once mated, the female spins a round egg sac, attaches it to her abdomen and it carries around with her. When it’s time to mate, male wolf spiders attract females by rhythmically waving their long mouthparts (palps) or drumming them on leaves. One species has even been found living in wheat crops, feeding on pests such as aphids. From deserts to rainforests, grasslands to suburban lawns, wolf spider thrive there’s likely one nearby. While some species are found on cold, rocky mountaintops, others live in volcanic lava tubes. Wolf spiders have figured out how to live just about anywhere. Sometimes they dig burrows or make holes under rocks or logs to live in. The dark, mottled colors on their bodies help them blend in with decaying plant matter while hunting or avoiding predators. Most wolf spiders spend their time on the ground. Two large eyes gleam from the top of the head two more large eyes peer out the front and four smaller eyes form a row just above the spider’s mouth.
